Sleep deprivation and your body

As we all know, getting enough sleep is vital for a healthy mind and body. So what makes sleep so important? In this blog post we will discuss how you can get enough sleep and the importance of not burning your candle on both ends.

In ancient and medieval times, people did not sleep only once a day. Most people slept for a few hours throughout the day and night. In those days it was the perfect way to live as most things took longer than today. Fires for ovens had to be started hours before food needed to be cooked. Wood had to be collected and dried. So many things were done differently back then. As time went buy, genius inventors like Edison devoted their lives to simplifying the world.

Menial tasks could be completed faster and quicker than ever before. A brilliant man like Ford, made traveling something very few of us think about these days. Long distances can now be traveled in comfort and without taking up days or even weeks of your life. Instead, we rush from one thing to the next.

The majority of people work the average 9-5; 5 days a week. Mornings have to start before sunrise otherwise you’ll get stuck in traffic. There is no time for napping or slowing down during the day. In the evenings you have to fight your way through traffic and the over crowded grocery store. When you finally get home, you have but an hour or two to prepare dinner, eat, wash dishes, clean up, shower, wind down and then ultimately to get into bed.

The problem with being busy throughout the day, it that some may find it very hard to relax in the evening. You might keep thinking about work or problems that need solving. To prevent this from happening is rather difficult and can take some time to master. It is advised that an adult needs 6-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep each evening. Below are a few hints you can try to improve your sleep.

  • Do not bring work home. Rather finish it at work and go home later, or if possible, leave it to the following day. You need to shut down, you can’t do that if you have your office in a bag.
  • Follow a routine. It is very important that you follow the same routine every day. Wake up at the same time, eat at the same times and go to bed at the same time. Your body will quickly adjust to the new routine and you will get hungry and tired at the right times.
  • Complete all your household duties before 9. This includes a bath or shower. You should be completely dressed and ready for bed by 9. Feel free to watch your favourite TV show.
  • Switch all devices off at least 30 minutes before getting into bed. The light from mobile devices and the television, stimulates your eyes, which in turn will make it more difficult to fall asleep.
  • Read a book before bed. Reading stimulates your brain. It focuses your thoughts on what you’re reading in stead of your day. By reading before bed you can also reduce bad dreams and nightmares, BUT it does depend on the book you’re reading.
  • Don’t work on weekends. Try not to work on a weekend, again, leave your computer, paper work etc at work. Rather spend quality time with your family, pets, friends or even with yourself. Our bodies need time to recharge for the upcoming week.
  • Exercise is an important aspect of a healthy body and mind. Getting as little as 30 minutes of exercise each day can drastically improve your sleep.
  • Say NO to junk food. Junk food wreaks havoc in your body. This includes high sugar drinks, candy, sweet treats, pastries, pizza etc. Stick with fresh fruit and veg, non-greasy, home made food.
  • Drink enough water.
  • Do not drink coffee after 6 o’clock in the evening. Caffeine is great as a morning booster, but do not consume caffeine in the evening. Rather opt for tee like Rooibos or Green tea.
